Athmad follwed up his Wolverhampton success under Paul Mulrennan with a dead heat at Newcastle.  A messy race early, Athmad and Paul were joined on the line by the Mick Appleby trained favoruite, Hathlool.

“The early pace was steady and most of these were headstrong; the time was 13.05sec above standard. ATHMAD just did enough from 1lb higher than when a narrow outright winner at Wolverhampton nine days earlier. He was 1lb lower than when successful over C&D in August.”
