A cold, wet, dreary twill-light meeting at Wolverhampton saw Red Cape win his third race of the year, the yards 40th and James Sullivan's 50th! The Racing Post commented "Mainly exposed sorts in a useful handicap. The gallop was just an ordinary one for a sprint and the winner raced centre-to-far-side in the straight. RED CAPE has been running creditably on Polytrack and did well to notch his second course win of the winter given he took a strong hold in the first half of the race. He should continue to go well away from progressive or well-handicapped sorts."

Red the return to Wolverhampton and finished 2nd over 6f. A race for him between Christmas and New Year back at Wolverhampton is our last chance to get 40!
A wet day at Southwell and Autumn finishes 2nd again...... going to struggle to get 40 for the year. We've only got 2 horses left in training!
Earlier in the year a friend of a friend of Ruth's visited the yard to take photos of thoroughbreds to base a sculpture on. With over 25 years experience, Amanda Hughes-Lubeck is one of the leading equestrian and animal sculptors in the country and has developed a reputation for first class quality and creativity. Amanda’s sculptural career began when she studied for 2 years at the prestigious Sir Henry Doulton School of Sculpture in her home town of Stoke-on-Trent. Her career led her to create many of the original prototype sculptures for Royal Doulton, Royal Worcester, Royal Crown Derby, Wedgwood and Beswick. Amanda has also completed many individual commissions including the bronze knight award for Intercontinental Hotels Group. Click here to view photos of Amanda's sculpture and find out more.

Still on our mission to get that elusive 40th winner we have managed two seconds. Autumn Blades put a disappointing first effort for us behind him when finishing a close second at Wolverhampton and Red Cape tried to follow up his Wolverhampton win under a penalty to finish 2nd in a photograph.

Red Cape came back to form at Wolverhampton under James Sullivan after a quiet spell for the yard as most of the horses are now on their holidays. The Racing Post commented "They went a fast pace in the sprint handicap and the 20-1 winner burst back to form in emphatic style. RED CAPE had not fired on his last six runs but he had dropped to 5lb lower than his Newcastle victory in July and found a surging run dropped back to 5f to register a first AW success since March 2007."
Owner, Mick Atkins, came to the yard with his camera and took these lovely photos of the boys (geldings) in the field in front of the house. More photos by Mick can be found by clicking here.

Good old Becks ran his heart out to finish 2nd at Newmarket. He was out of the gates like a rocket, leaving the rest of the runners trailing by at least 2 lengths but got collared close home by an unexposed 3yo. The Racing Post commented "A very competitive handicap to finish the Newmarket season, with just 8lb covering the entire field on official ratings, not including weight-for-age allowances. Beckermet, an in-form veteran, having won three of last four, had gone up 15lb for those three wins but put up a gallant effort from the front, only to be worn down late on. He might have preferred more cut in the ground."

To keep up to date with all the latest happenings at the yard on your mobile phone click here .
Old Becks seems to love the soft ground these days and saw off his younger rivals (including Klynch!) to win at Catterick. He is 9yo veteran of over 100 races and a winner of 11. The Racing Post commented " Like the first division, a competitive handicap, though the winning time was 0.78 seconds slower than the first leg. BECKERMET, successful in two of his three previous starts having gone a long time without scoring before winning in May, was 6lb higher than for his C&D success ten days earlier, but again advertised his current wellbeing with another convincing success. He was very wide when making progress on the home bend, but that became an advantage when he bagged the nearside rail and he neverlooked like being caught after hitting the front over 2f from home. He holds an entry at Newmarket on Saturday and in his current mood you wouldn´t bet against him."
Tory and Ben were in charge for three days this week as Ruth was away buying new recruits for next years string. The majority of our horses are now resting for the winter, growing thick woolly coats and enjoying getting really muddy! Poor Arnie isn't one of them and he ran a really good race behind a well handicapped horse to finish 2nd at Southwell.

Old Becks is quite the yard star this Autumn. After appearing in the Racing Posts Sunday feature "I Gotta A Horse" he put a mid division, drawn on the wrong side run at Newcastle behind him to win convincing at Catterick.
The Racing Post commented " Part two of the divided 7f handicap and again the pace was very strong. BECKERMET, drawn on the wrong side when well beaten at Newcastle four days earlier, recorded his tenth career win on his 110th start. He races with tremendous enthusiasm and, helped by the company of a loose horse, readily came clear. He is a fine advert for his yard."

Becks has run 16 times this year and has now won 2 and been in the first four on 10 other occasions! What a star!
The Racing Post commented "A fair sprint handicap. BECKERMET has been very consistent this year despite his poor recent win record and was always in a good position just behind the leaders. He maintained his effort to hit the front half a furlong from home and gain only his second success in his last 55 starts."

Classic Descent was beaten less than a length and half to finish 4th at Pontefract, Amazing Blue Sky less than a length to be 3rd at Redcar, Dubai Dynamo failed by only hlaf a length to finish 2nd at Chester and Lucky Art was 4th only beaten a length at Wolverhampton.

We now have a horse walker to aid us in the recuperation of horses coming back from injury. Controlled exercise is an important step in a horses rehabilitation back into full work. The surface is the same "rubber tarmac" used on the walk ways at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai. It is not enclosed so that horses can see what's happening around them to stop boredom. The walker is also a good tool for young horses but we won't be sending the older horses insane by making them march round it for hours on end!
Charlie won readily at Redcar under PJ McDonald to qualify for the John Smiths Straight Mile Final back at Redcar on the 1st October. The Racing Post commented "Quite a competitive 71-85 handicap £2,300 below tariff. CHARLIE COOL, who ended a drought lasting a year with victory in a York claimer three outings ago, has slipped to a lenient mark. Ridden with bags of confidence, he came from off the pace to make this look very straightforward. He has run well here in the past but this was his first course win and sets him up nicely for the final of this series next month."
Klynch ran a fantastic race to finish a close 3rd at Hamilton. Amazing Blue Sky finished 4th at Newcastle. Charlie Cool was 3rd with a troubled passage at Beverley.

Light The City was 3rd at Southwell and new recruit On The High Tops was 4th on his first start for us at Chester. Ben had his fourth ride on Tournedos at Hamilton and finished 3rd. Tournedos is now retired and will be rehomed with Joanne from near Rotherham.

There were good efforts recently from Dubai Dynamo 3rd at Ascot, Light The City 3rd at Beverley, Dhhamaan 2nd at Doncaster and Beckermet who deserves a special mention his 2nd at Newcastle means he has now been in the first three in his last 10 races.

San Cassiano was given a canny front running ride by Jimmy to make all under a penalty at Leicester. The Racing Post commented "An ordinary handicap run at a false pace. The first two always occupied the same positions and this is not form to take too seriously. SAN CASSIANO made all at Ripon on Monday and he defied a penalty in similar fashion. Allowed an easy lead this time, he found sufficient for pressure. A back-to-back winner last summer too, he could bid for a hat-trick at Newmarket on Thursday."

Ben had his second ride on Amazing Blue Sky in the Gentleman's Amatuer Riders race and finished 3rd.

Chosen One had his first run for new owners Bridget Houlston and Richard Wilson in the Chaplins Club Handicap named after the the horse trained to win many races by Ruth's Grandfather, David Chapman. It was very nearly the fairytale start but for a late finisher "doing" us on the line!

San Cassiano made all under Phil Makin to win at Ripon. The Racing Post commented "A competitive handicap despite the size of the field but an all-the-way winner. SAN CASSIANO had not won since taking successive races just over a year ago, but was dropping in grade and was 6lb below that last winning mark. He made all the running from his inside stall and battled on gamely when challenged."

Dhhamaan won his second race of the week when making all under PJ at local track Thirsk. The Racing Post commented "The time was 0.78 seconds slower than the first division, although the ground would have deteriorated a touch. DHHAMAAN continued his good run of form by defying a penalty for his recent front-running win at Ayr, again being allowed to dominate. He was strong at the line and can remain competitive when getting his own way."

Al Muheer, a classy performer at best, won at Musselburgh under a
persuasive Jimmy Sullivan. Winning his first race for two years hopefully Al will got some confidence from the win and can do the same again. The Racing Post commented "A modest 58-74 handicap run at a furious pace and half-a-dozen almost in a line over a furlong out.
AL MUHEER had won just one of his last 26 starts but that came from a mark of 99 in a Class 2 handicap at Ascot two years ago. Running from a mark of just 74 here he was persuaded to put his best foot forward and ran out a convincing winner in the end. Yet another testimony to this yard´s skill at turning off-casts round."

Lucky ran a corker to finish 2nd at Catterick. Cono Zur ran well to be 4th at Ascot. Becks was 2nd at Ayr - his ninth consecutive top 3 placing.

Lucky and friend scratch each others backs Cono grazing Becks lunging
Dhhamaan made all under a fine ride from PJ McDonald at Ayr. The Racing Post commented "DHHAMAAN was just pipped by a subsequent winner after trying to make all off this mark over C&D seven days earlier. Employing the same positive tactics here, this time they worked and he proved very game when the challengers arrived. Having proved that he can take two races close together, he would have to be taken seriously if taking up one of his entries at either Thirsk or Musselburgh on Friday."
We sent three runners to the big money 7f handicap at Ascot but it was Red Cape who brought the money home when winning for the first time over 5f at Newcastle. This was Middleham Park Racing's four hundreth winner!
The Racing Post commented "RED CAPE, who had never won over 5f previously, has been really consistent since May and found the quick gallop play to his strengths. He rarely runs badly which keeps him high in the weights."
Cono Zur was unlucky to get nabbed on the line to finish 2nd at Nottingham. Dubai Dynamo ran another fantastic race to finish 3rd in a hot Newmarket handicap. Dhhamaan ran his heart out to be beaten a short head at Ayr. Beckermet was also 2nd at Ayr and Classic Descent finished 4th.

After four years of trying to get a winner at our local track York we finally got to stand on the winners podium. Charlie Cool was beaten when odds on at Doncaster the previous week but came good on the Knavesmire to win comfortably. The Racing Post commented " Pretty useful efforts from the leading pair who came well clear. CHARLIE COOL was beaten at this level last time, but is a cut above most he´ll meet in this grade and made no mistake this time, quickening clear in the final 2f. He´ll continue to be tough to beat kept to these. QUOTES: Trainer Ruth Carr: "Charlie Cool is a bit of a monkey, but he is still an entire." "

Orpsie made the journey to Warwick in an attepmt to follow up his Catterick win and did so quite nicely. The Racing Post commented "A competitive handicap featuring several established front-runners.
ORPSIE BOY shrugged off a 6lb penalty for his Catterick success eight days earlier. He got to the front inside the last and, hard driven, gradually inched away from the runner-up. QUOTES: Owner Toby Brereton: "Six furlongs is Orpsie Boy´s best distance and I think he prefers a turning track these days. He may go to Pontefract on July 24, but we´d be concerned if the ground was any softer than this." "
Orpsie in the front field with the geldings
Light The City went to Southwell with a penalty for his Catterick success and followed up in good style. The Racing Post commented "Just a modest finale but the first two in the betting drew clear and it is probably reasonable form for the grade. LIGHT THE CITY, under a penalty, followed up his recent Catterick win with one gained, if not so quite so readily this time, certainly with more substance to its form, beating off one very well-handicapped at his best and with market support behind him, having travelled ominously strongly into contention in the straight. It would be folly to rule out a three-timer in his current mood."

Good efforts from Cono Zur - 2nd and Beckermet -3rd both at Ayr. Also placed at Pontefract Amazing Blue Sky - 3rd and Klynch - 2nd.

Moheebn won a nice first prize of over £7500 when taking the Stobart Silver Cup at Carlisle. He's run several good races in defeat recently and deserved to get his head in front. The Racing Post commented "
A competitive affair for this 61-80 mile handicap, the feature race of the evening.
A strong pace, probably, helped the consistent MOHEEB get his head back in front after nearly two years. He stayed on strongly form his midfield position to take up the running the final furlong and win going away. All his wins had come on a slower surface but he had placed form on a quicker surface and looked to be coming to hand with his stable enjoying a good run. He is a reliable performer and, although, he will take a rise for this he can remain competitive especially around here."

Good placed efforts also towards the end of this month from Amazing Blue Sky 3rd at Haydock, Charlie Cool 2nd at Doncaster, San Cassiano 3rd at Haydock, Red Cape 2nd at Newcastle, Beckermet 2nd at Doncaster and Galpin Junior 2nd at Beverley.

Another great day at the races resulted in two horses bouncing back to form in great style and taking Ruth's flat winner tally to 100. Everything went right for Orspie Boy in the hands of, man of the moment, Silvestre De Souza. A former listed race performer Orpsie showed he's still got it when things go his way. Light The City had placed form in the Winter on the all weather whilst a lot of the horses were out of form and came good under James Sullivan who has recently lost his 3lb claim.
The Racing Post commented
"A competitive handicap, though not one that was run at the breakneck gallop that seemed likely beforehand, given the number of usual front runners up against each other.
ORPSIE BOY´s best form to date has been at 6f, but he was suited by the test of speed at the trip and took advantage of a mark 2lb lower than last time to win a shade cosily. He might well have more to offer given that´s been lightly raced this year compared to many of his revived stablemates."
"A more strongly-run handicap than the first division with the two pacesetters ultimately paying the price, but overall weak-looking form.
LIGHT THE CITY clearly wasn´t right last time, but off his lowest mark for some time finally showed some of the sparkle that his stable companions have this year, always travelling well and being in little danger once sent on early in the straight. He´s a very modest win record, however, and this took so little winning that he´s no sure thing to follow up."
New owner, Mick Atkins, came to the yard with his camera and took these lovely photos of the boys (geldings) in the field in front of the house. More photos by Mick can be found by clicking here.

A busy day at Newcastle on Plate day with four runners and all four horses bringing home some prizemoney! Klynch set the ball rolling with a good run off 9lb higher than when winning the previous Saturday at Ayr to finish 4th. Djay and Dubai ran in the same race and finished one, two in that order. Djay was bouncing back from a disappointing run over a mile only 2 days earlier and Dubai has been ultra consistant has has finished 1st or 2nd in his last six runs! San Cassiano rounded the afternoon off with a good front running performance to finish 2nd just nabbed on the line.
The Racing Post commented:-
The field were spread out in the closing stages, but the main action unfolded up the middle of the track. This looked a pretty clean race for a big-field sprint and the form should be sound enough. The time was 0.75 seconds slower than the Group 3 Chipchase Stakes. Klynch arrived on the scene going easily but didn´t find quite enough. He had won four of his last five starts, but was up 9lb for his latest success and faced with better company.
Klynch in sheepskin noseband - centre
A decent enough handicap run at a good pace, suiting those waited with. They raced up the middle of the track. A one-two for Ruth Carr, with IMPERIAL DJAY coming out on top. He wasn´t at his best over 1m here two days previously, but prior to thathe´d been going the right way and he returned to form with a game effort. Considering he made a big effort to get to the front before being challenged by his stable companion, he did well to keep on so strongly. There could be more to come. Dubai Dynamo achieved his sixth consecutive top-two finish, in the process reversing recent form with Xilerator. He was clear of the others and, like his successful stablemate, is one to keep on side for now.
A fair handicap, although the pace looked just ordinary. San Cassiano responded well to the combination of the step up in trip and removal of blinkers. He´s unexposed at this distance, though he was well ridden and is not be sure to build on this.

Lucky Art who romped home at Ripon recently has been syndicated giving everyone a chance to get involved for a sensible outlay then an all in fixed monthly fee. £250 buys you 2.5% and then £69 a month covers all costs. Lucky will run either at Newmarket on Friday evening or Chester on Saturday and a reproduction of his recent form will give him a massive chance. Click here for more details and contact numbers.
Klynch made the long journey to Ayr and trounced the opposition on the rain softened ground. This was a really impressive performance with everything to like about his attitude. A mention should be given to James "Jimmy" Sullivan for a ride inwhich he didn't have to move and a ride which meant he has ridden out his 3lb claim. The Racing post commented "The official going was changed to soft before this race. No more than a fair handicap and a messy one too, the winner allowed to dictate a steady pace. The field stayed centre to stand side. KLYNCH was much sharper away from the stalls than last time under a change of rider and was always going to take some catching once it was clear he was dictating a steady gallop left alone in front. All the same, the manner in which he put the race to bed was impressive but he´ll still need a career best to overcome the rise in the weights he´ll face for this win."

Klynch coming in from the paddock on Sunday morning, and putting himself away into his stable ready for his lunch time feed!
There's currently no stopping Lucky Art and a 9lb rise in the handicap wasn't enough to stop him under another blitzing, front running, ride by James Sullivan. The Racing Post commented "Only one horse counted here, as LUCKY ART bounced out of the gates, grabbed the stands´ rail and made every yard to win eased down. He´d been put up 9lb for winning at Catterick earlier in the month but that proved no barrier and he´s clearly well ahead of the handicapper. An easy 5f suits him well, but he´s not a good traveller apparently, so he´ll be kept quite local in a bid to follow up under a penalty, and might turn out at Newcastle a week on Friday."

Lucky in the field at home
Classic Descent made it a double for the yard and jockey in the following race when winning by a head. The Racing Post commented "CLASSIC DESCENT, 1lb well in at the weights following his Haydock second, finished strongly down the centre of the track to just edge the result close home. He has a poor strike-rate and has to be delivered with a late challengelike this, so it was a good ride from James Sullivan."

Classsic Descent at home

No winners but the horses are still in good order and placed efforts from Red Cape 2nd, Beckermet 3rd, Dhhamaan 2nd and 4th, Cono Zur 3rd on ground too soft, Classic Descent 2nd, Tournedos 3rd and San Cassiano 3rd and 4th.
Beckermet is lead in at Thirsk, Cono Zur relaxing in his stable and Red Cape in the field.
Lucky Art bounced back to form at Catterick when winning the 5f handicap in very good style. The Racing Post commented "This looked a tight little handicap beforehand, but turned out to be anything but, LUCKY ART bolting up. Having the plum stall clearly helped, but the overriding impression was that this 5-y-o is back to the form he was showing earlier in his career, that no surprise given the current well-being of his yard, and he´ll be tough to stop if turned out under a penalty next week."

Lucky Art lunging at home.
Frognal has been a frustrating horse and won a young horses seller at Redcar. We let him go in the post race auction and wish he new connections the best of luck. The Racing Post commented "The best horse in the race on BHA ratings, FROGNAL was always cantering in behind the speed and, despite not doing a great deal once in front, he always looked to be doing enough. Clearly suited by the drop in grade, he´s a decent sort at this level but is still capable of running well in handicaps."

Tournedos enjoyed the stiff 5f at Carlisle winning under PJ McDonald. The Racing Post commented "TOURNEDOS had only managed to win one of his previous 29 starts, but he put up an extraordinary performance here as it looked as though he only joined in over a furlong from home, so well was he going. He apprecited the uphill finish and may turn out again under a penalty at Hamilton on Thursday. If he were able to repeat this he would be a short price to follow up, but his overall profile tempers enthusiasm."
Klynch made it a hat trick for Douglas Renton who is a new owner at Mowbray House Farm. The Racing Post commented "A fairly competitive sprint handicap. The field raced on the far side.
KLYNCH mowed down a wide-margin subsequent winner when ending a long losing streak at Hamilton and followed up in good style at Carlisle on Monday. He had penalty to deal with but produced a sweeping run out wide to complete the hat-trick in good style. Rated in the 90s in his youth, his resurgence could continue and he could be hard to stop in a bid to make it four wins in a row next time. He holds entries at Carlisle on Monday and Hamilton on Thursday."
Amazing Blue Sky went to Haydock after a good second there the previous week and 4lb in front of the handicapper. He won well for leading lady rider Serena Brotherton. The Racing Post commented "A competitive handicap perhaps not run at the very strong pace that seemed likely beforehand. AMAZING BLUE SKYhad signalled a return to form when only just failing to make all here last time and went one better under similar tactics, not asked to do so much in front and stretching clear in good style late on. He was competitive off much higher marks last year before his yard went into the doldrums, and is sure to remain of interest next time despite a rise in the weights."

Beckermet has been running well of late and won in convincing fashion at Ayr. The Racing Post commented "Having his 99th race, BECKERMET showed early speed and good resolution under pressure to get back in the winner´s enclosure. It will be fantastic for all concerned with the horse if he manages to follow this up on his 100th start."
After hitting the goal post twice Dubai Dynamo won in good fashion at Ripon. PJ McDonald had to wait for the gaps to come but once they did Dubai quickly put the race to bed. The Racing Post commented "A good, competitive handicap. The form looks solid, with the front three having all been running well of late.
DUBAI DYNAMO has been in good form, finishing second over C&D last time having tried to come from too far back, and although again left with plenty of running to do, he finished strongly and in plenty of time, for his second turf win of the season. He´ll now head to Newcastle on Thursday and a trip to Royal Ascot may be on the cards as well, with the Buckingham Palace Stakes, in which he was well beaten last year, presumably the aim."
Dubai relaxing in the paddock with a much smaller 2yo.
After near misses from Dubai Dynamo and Amazing Blue Sky Klynch went in again at Carlisle. Ease in the ground seems to help him and he won with a little in hand. The Racing Post commented "An ordinary sprint to conclude proceedings, though the front two deserve some credit for coming well clear. KLYNCH´s Hamilton form had been boosted by Pelmanism in the previous race and he defied a 6lb rise. He´s clearly back in his best form for a while and it may take a bit of time for the handicapper to catch up with him as he´s won off much higher marks than this earlier in his career."
We had four runners at our local track Thirsk and had three at short prices but a long priced winner. Dhhamaan was given an inspired ride by PJ McDonald to win over 7f drawn 14 of 14 runners. The Racing Post commented "A low-grade affair to end proceedings, with the winner another on the night to benefit from an enterprising ride from a wide draw. DHHAMAAN´s return to form is a further indication of the current good health of his yard, though he owed much of his win here to a smart ride, early aggression meaning his outside draw wasn´t the issue it might have been and all out at the line. That said, race conditions rather than any rise in the weights will probably dictate whether he follows up or not given there´s little mileage in his mark."
We sent out our first runners on Friday after Grandad's death. He wouldn't have wanted the horses to stay at home so we sent out 6 runners to three meetings.
Imperial Djay has kept improving and came from nearly last to first at Chester to score in a photo under Franny Norton. The Racing Post commented "The second running of this handicap produced a competitive race, and decent form for the grade. IMPERIAL DJAY, held up as usual and not looking to be going that well at one stage, was still towards the back of the field turning in but came with a strong run to snatch the race on the post. A fine advertisement for his trainer, he was 4lb ahead of the handicapper under the penalty for his win at Thirsk and no less than 27lb higher than when winning at Newcastle a year ago."

Klynch has not managed to get his head in front since we've had him but has dropped down the handicap and won well at Hamilton uner James Sullivan. The Racing Post commented "Not the most competitive 0-70 handicap, but it was run at a true pace.
Hailing from an in-form stable, KLYNCH earned a deserved success, ending a run of 25 defeats dating back to July 2009, when he scored in a 6f Haydock handicap off a mark of 79.He has tumbled down the weights since and scored here off 63, sticking to his task having run widest of all. The ground helped his cause and while he is worth keeping on the right side of, he did have a hard race."
Grandma, I and our families would like everyone to join us for refreshments after the service. Please come, everyone is welcome and we look forward to reminiscing and sharing our wonderful memories of Grandad.
Burn Hall (YO61 1JB) is 10 mintues drive from the church. Head back onto the A19 to York, after a couple of miles turn left at the cross roads signed Huby. Burn Hall is about half a mile on the left.
A private family cremation will be followed by a Celebration and Thanksgiving Service for David's life held at St Johns Church, Easingwold at 11.30am on Wednesday 11th May - all welcome. Family flowers only please but donations in lieu if desired to York District Hospital and Martin House Hospice.
It is with great sadness and shock that I add to this webpage details regarding the death of my Grandad, David Chapman. He was a well respected man locally and in the racing industy. It goes without saying that he has been huge influence on my life - both personally and in my career.
The many cards, texts and emails have mentioned his dry sense of humor, his twinkling eyes, his wonderful stories and the fact that he was always approachable and had time to talk to anyone.
Grandad loved children and the words of one owner sums this up. "We only met Mr Chapman a few times but on each occasion he was great company; a true gentle man, who seemed full of fun, with a dry and wicked (!) humour as well as a small bit of mischief! He was so kind to Charlie and Emily when we came to visit you - I'm not sure too many legendary trainers would have happily pulled them along on a cart whilst being whipped!"
Grandad was a pioneer in new training techniques that often worked wonders on the horses in his care. Many of them went on to win race after race after race. The achievements of Soba, Chaplins Club, Quito, Soaked, Glencroft and many more were no coincidence.
The coming days and weeks will be extremely hard and we will have a huge gap in our lives but it's a comfort to know that he didn't suffer and only minutes before he was in the yard with his horses.
Ruth Carr

David Chapman 10th July 1933 - 2nd May 2011
Cono Zur made it two from three when making all at Beverley. The Racing post commented "A fair handicap, although it paid to race prominently with CONO ZUR making the most of being able to dominate. He was turned out relatively quickly after his narrow defeat at Pontefract the previous week, with his connections understandably expectinga further weight rise, and he was defying a mark 5lb higher than when successful at Haydock on his reappearance. He can be competitive off higher ratings, particularly when able to get his own way in front."

Both Dubai Dynamo and Imperial Djay needed to run in the 7f handicap at Thirsk on Saturday and luckily the race divided and we won each division!
Dubai has dropped down the weights and has looked ready to do himself justice. The Racing Post commented:- The first of the two divisions of this handicap was run at a slow early tempo (but recorded just the quicker time), meaning plenty were fighting for their heads in the back straight and round the bend. DUBAI DYNAMO is well treated and has been running respectably recently, so this success didn´t come out of turn. It took him a long time to get on top, so a longer home straight will probably suit him better in the search of a follow-up.
Dubai relaxing in the paddock after his win.
DJ had run really well earlier in the week over a straight mile at Redcar and won in convincing fashion. The Racing Post commented "This looked a bit of a messy race, as a few of the runners appeared to find trouble in running in the final stages.
IMPERIAL DJAY had been showing signs of a revival recently but didn´t look especially well weighted on his winning form. However, after being settled in rear, he loomed up going really strongly and won in good style after going on."

Surely the law of averages would say that if you had three horses in photo finishes at least one would win! Cono Zur followed up his Haydock win with a good effort at Pontefract. He led all the way just to get beaten on the nod. Beckermet, previously a high class performer, went very close but was beaten a nose at Newcastle and in the following race Classic Descent finished 3rd in a three way photo after being short of room on the rail.
We have put a new lunge pit in, that its fenced with rails like at the race courses. Ruth can now lunge two horses at the same time safely! It is also useful for bringing on the young horses before they go on the gallops.

Cono had been off the tract since August 2010, been castrated and had a nice long, (cold!) winter break. He came good at the first time of asking over a mile with Seb Sanders on board making all. The Racing Post commented "A modest handicap and one run at just a fair gallop with the first two in the van throughout but the winner did it well and didn´t look flattered. CONO ZUR hadn´t been seen since August (since when he´s been gelded) but he goes very well on fast ground as his action suggests he should and allowed to make the running, this his second success under such tactics. He might well continue to be well handicapped even after a rise given the problems his yard faced last year."

Lucky followed up his success at Southwell with a short head win at Ripon. He showed speed from the stalls to get across to the rails and although he was headed he stayed on again in the final furlong to win. The Racing Post commented "A wide-open apprentice handicap over 5f which resulted in a very tight finish. LUCKY ART showed terrific early pace to get over to the nearside rail from his wide draw and despite being headed inside the final furlong, kept rolling to get his headin front on the line.. His yard is showing signs of returning to form having been in a trough since last summer and he´ll remain well-handicapped even after a rise for this. He´s in again at Southwell next Tuesday and as he has won this off 9lb higher than he is rated on the all-weather, he´ll surely take all the beating there."
Good runs recently from Frognal 2nd, Classic Descent 2nd, Klynch 2nd and Imperial Djay 4th.
We've had plenty of placed horses recently including Klynch, Light The City and Castlebury but hadn't had a winner since July (as the papers kept reminding us!) Lucky Art got his nose (literally!) in front over 5f furlongs at Southwell. The Racing Post commented "A moderate but competitive sprint handicap in which LUCKY ART provided his trainer with her first winner since last July. As might now be the case with a few of the Ruth Carr horses, he looked well handicapped - 21lb lower than when last successful in August 2009 - and just did enough. He might be able to follow up."

It's been a frustrating time with the weather and the horses being out of form. Hopefully the tide has turned and Tomintoul Star was third at Southwell on Sunday on her first start for three and a half months which was a good sign.
Ruth nominated Ben for the DAVID NICHOLSON NEWCOMER AWARD at the GODOLPHIN STUD AND STABLE STAFF AWARDS 2011. He made it through to the final 10 in his catagory and a panel, made up of Brough Scott, Dinah Nicholson, John Reid, Ian Balding, David Redvers and Judith Allen, will now have the difficult task of working through the remaining nomination forms, including an interview with each nominee, before deciding on three finalists within each category.
